About Leslie

Leslie Day is an author and naturalist whose work reveals the extraordinary ecology of New York City. Best known for her acclaimed field guides, including Field Guide to the Natural World of New York City, Field Guide to the Street Trees of New York City, Field Guide to the Neighborhood Birds of New York City and Honeybee Hotel, the story of the honeybees living on the roof garden of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. She brings a scientist’s eye and a storyteller’s sensibility to the landscapes of the urban environment.

A longtime resident of the 79th Street Boat Basin, Leslie has spent decades observing the intricate, often overlooked ecosystems that thrive within the city. She holds a doctorate in science education from Columbia University and taught science for many years before turning her focus fully to writing and public engagement.

Today, she leads nature walks and teaches throughout the city, working with organizations including the New York Historical Society, Fort Tryon Park Trust, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. She is also a faculty member in the Adult Education program at the New York Botanical Garden, where she teaches botany classes to botanical artists, landscapers, gardeners, horticultural therapists, and horticulturists.
